Gang members keeping watch at the elementary schools for the purpose of recruitment

In Honduras, it is not uncommon for gang members to keep watch at the elementary schools for the purpose of recruitment. I knew two women; I led them to the Lord and had met with them on several occasions. The two women were part of a group of Honduran psychologists and social workers that I had the privilege of working with on several occasions. The two women were killed by gang members on their way to a school to address a child’s domestic problem. As a Honduran psychologist or a social worker, the chances of being killed are good. The shocking thing is these psychologists and social workers keep showing up to work every day.

It is hard to put on paper the emotions -the devastation I feel-because the grief, disgust, and pain can be overwhelming when I think of the details and reason for these two women’s death.

At the bottom of such horrible acts is corruption. Hondurans lives in the vicious cycle of corruption and grief, more corruption, more grief…  Therefore, a big part of my vision for the children of Honduras is to protect the professionals working hard to care for them.  Hopefully, in the future when a social worker, psychologist, and maybe even a doctor visit a school to help a child - they will be safe and not fear murder.
